Pam and I got the privilege tonight to get to know the unit I’m supporting in the Army. Unbeknownst to most, they are more like a Fighter Squadron than I otherwise thought. They can drink and party with the best of them. Moreover, I think they had a breath of fresh air knowing that a fighter pilot was taking up the new ALO slot.
So here I am, invited to their “Hail and Farewell” ceremony. Initially, I felt like a fish out of water (as Pam did). However, as the night progressed, it got better. The Commander introduced me, and I went up to give my regards. Apparently, they make you sing a song as initiation into their group. So, I thought, what better way than to sing the old “Hound War Song” (thanks Trip and Snooze)! I began with the last phrasing (with help from Wiley, Derby, Tru, and Rexxx… yes, I didn’t know the complete lyrics and they helped me out at a moment’s pinch).
I got on stage and started with: “the most beautiful girl that I did ever see, I dreamt that one day I would get inside her…” And the Commander promptly ushered me off the stage… Apparently, it was a little too non-PC (non-Politically Correct, that is) for the environment with wives being around and all. As he “helped” me offstage, I promised him it got better from there, so reluctantly, he let me continue: “I finally got my way, I ‘fly’ her everyday, she’s the only one for me and she’s a Viper; Singing aye aye aye, we’ll fight until we die, and our enemies are gone forever more, raining fire from above for the freedom that we love, we are the Hounds of Heaven, the Bloody Dogs of War!!!”
I may have redeemed myself… but the Army Commander claimed that this was the only combined Hail and Farewell that he’s done: Hail to me being new, and Farewell to me after singing a non-PC song. He was joking of course… So here’s to the Army and Pam and our wonderful initiation…
